Getting the Kids Involved

Recently I posted an “Ask the Expert”. Well let me tell you the most asked question on that post.

“Do you have any tips to help keep the tiny humans (and some big ones) motivated with maintenance?”

Reading this question reminded me of a quote from Benjamin Franklin.

Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I may remember. Involve me and I will learn

Getting kids involved and motivated to keep a home decluttered and organised can be tricky at times but it can also be loads of fun and rewarding experience for the entire family.

Here are some tips to help you encourage your kids to participate in maintaining an organised home:

1. Lead by Example: Children are more likely to follow your lead. Show them your own commitment to decluttering and organizing by consistently practicing good habits. When they see you actively engaging in these activities, they'll be inspired to do the same.

2. Organise Together: Make decluttering and organising a family activity. Set aside dedicated time each week or month for a family organising session. Work together to declutter common areas, rearrange furniture, or organise shared items. This not only teaches teamwork but also reinforces the importance of maintaining an organised home.

3. Age-Appropriate Tasks: Assign age-appropriate tasks to your children. Younger kids can help with simple tasks like picking up toys, folding laundry, or sorting items into categories. Older kids can take on more responsibilities like organising their own wardrobes or helping with meal planning and grocery shopping.

4. Make It a Game: Turn decluttering and organizing into a game or challenge. Set a timer and see how quickly everyone can tidy up their rooms or assign point systems and rewards for completing tasks. Adding an element of fun and competition can make the process more enjoyable for children.

5. Provide Clear Instructions: Clearly communicate what you expect from your children when it comes to decluttering and organising. Break down tasks into small, manageable steps and guide them through the process. Provide specific instructions, such as "Put all your toys back in the toy box" or "Fold your clothes and place them in the designated drawer."

6. Create Personal Spaces: Allow your children to have ownership over their personal spaces, such as their bedrooms or play areas. Let them choose how to organise their belongings within certain guidelines. This sense of ownership will motivate them to keep their spaces tidy and organised.

7. Use Visual Aids: Visual aids like charts, checklists, or colorful labels can be helpful in reminding and motivating children to stay organized. Create a chore chart or a daily checklist that includes decluttering and organising tasks. Encourage your kids to check off completed tasks, providing a sense of accomplishment.

8. Celebrate Success: Recognize and celebrate your children's efforts in keeping the home decluttered and organised. Praise their accomplishments and show appreciation for their contributions. Small rewards or incentives can further motivate them to continue their efforts.

9. Teach Donation and Sharing: Instill the value of giving back by teaching your children about donation and sharing. Encourage them to donate toys, clothes, or books they no longer need to those less fortunate. This not only reduces clutter but also cultivates empathy and generosity.

10. Patience and Encouragement: Remember that teaching children organisational skills is a process. Be patient, supportive, and provide gentle reminders when needed. Offer encouragement and acknowledge their progress and growth along the way.

By involving and motivating your children to keep the home decluttered and organised, you not only cultivate a clean and tidy living environment but also instill lifelong skills that will benefit them in various aspects of their lives.
